‘Vat rate is wrong, wrong – all wrong’ – Nash 19 owner on closure of iconic Cork restaurant

Claire Nash slams decision to hike hospitality Vat rate as soaring costs push restaurant out of business

Claire Nash’s restaurant Nash 19 was in business for over 30 years

Claire Nash has lashed out at the government’s recent decision to hike the hospitality Vat rate at a time of rapidly escalating costs, and said it had contributed to the closure of her well-known Cork restaurant.

Nash, the owner of Nash 19 on the city’s Princes Street, slammed the decision to revert to the 13.5 per cent Vat rate for hospitality businesses last September, describing it as “all wrong”.

“There is no doubt that the Vat rate is wrong, wrong – all wrong. I said this to [Minister] McGrath yesterday, I said it to Simon [Coveney] yesterday. I’ll say it again and again. It’s been my number one agenda item every time I meet them,” she told the Business Post.
