Unlike its sherry-inspired siblings in the Bushmills core range, the new 14 Year Old Single Malt has been finished in Muscat of Alexandria white wine Malaga casks for up to 12 months, after being aged in first and second-fill bourbon barrels for a minimum of 14 years. Some might call this exotic whiskey finish a bit unexpected.

To celebrate its release, here are five surprising facts you might not know about Bushmills Irish Whiskey.

1. The Old Bushmills Distillery once nearly perished

In 1885 a disastrous fire almost destroyed the Old Bushmills Distillery BUT, luckily for us, it was quickly rebuilt and rumour has it all of the whiskey was rescued. Phew.

2. It features in ‘the best novel ever written’...

Bushmills is mentioned by author James Joyce in his magnum opus ‘Ulysses’ from 1922. Maybe it’s worth a read?

3. …and in an iconic film

Robin Williams’ character in the 1997 film ‘Good Will Hunting’ favoured a sip of Bushmills Original. Great taste (and great minds, in this instance).

4. Its name isn’t coincidental

A nod to the unique natural landscape of the North Coast of Ireland, Bushmills gets its name from the River Bush where the Old Bushmills Distillery is located. The second part is from the mills that used to grind the barley, back in the day.

5. It has its own currency

Not really. But the Old Bushmills Distillery was the first distillery to ever feature on a banknote in celebration of its 400th anniversary in 2008, and these notes are still being circulated today.
