Tis the season to drink beautiful rosé in the summer sunshine. We’ve been blessed with some gorgeous weather lately, which has caused people up and down the country to break out their barbecues while sipping on cool summer tipples. For us, that means rosé and ALDI, which has 158 stores nationwide, has an exceptional range of rosé available in stores now that won’t break the bank – bottles start from just €7.99.
Did you know that rosé is made from red wine grapes? Perfectly pink in colour, rosé is the result of short contact fermentation with red grapes, often for only a few hours. It is made all over the world, but some of the very best come from France, Italy and Portugal. In particular, French rosé is renowned, especially those from Provence. More than 80 per cent of what is produced in this region is rosé which are often made with grenache, syrah, and mourvedre grapes. Cabernet sauvignon grapes are another popular choice, as is pinot noir, which is used to make ALDI’s Prosecco Rosé Millesimato Extra Dry 75cl Costellore, €13.49, which won bronze at the International Wine Challenge in 2021.
In terms of tasting rosé, the cotton candy coloured hues might put you in the mind of strawberries or roses and you wouldn’t be too far wrong – these two are some of the most commonly detected flavours in rosé alongside citrus and melon. On the nose, depending on the region and grapes, you can often detect some herbaceous notes, tropical fruit and other berries like cherries or raspberries.

By far the driest and perhaps most concentrated of these Portuguese reds, it’s big, brawny but balanced. Spicy on the nose, it explodes with raspberry and black plum fruit, seasoned with a touch of vanilla.

From sunny vineyards between the Cevennes mountains and the Med, this pretty pink has summer pudding aromas with a hint of ripe honeydew melon, dry and fruity.
Specially Selected Costa Toscana Organic Rosé €8.99
A Tuscan delight showcasing the region’s top grape, Sangiovese, plus just a seasoning of Merlot and Syrah. Crunchy redcurrants, tingling fresh acidity and a very user-friendly style.
