Out of Office: Simon Harris gets seal of approval

The Business Post gets you up to date with the big stories of the day

Welcome to the Business Post’s Out of Office, your round-up of the day’s business, tech, markets, legal and politics news.

There was only one show in town today, and it starred Simon Harris. Ireland’s youngest ever taoiseach was elected this afternoon after a vote by TDs and a visit to the Aras to collect the seal of office. You can read Cónal Thomas’ sketch here.

The first item on Harris’ agenda was a mini cabinet reshuffle, with Peter Burke and Patrick O’Donovan appointed enterprise and higher education ministers.

In his final speech, outgoing taoiseach Leo Varadkar hit out at the “coarseness and even toxicity” in political debate in recent years.

Elsewhere, Catherine Sanz reported on a landmark decision from the Supreme Court, which ruled that new guidelines for personal injuries awards should stand. You can read Eoin O’Hare’s analysis of what this could mean for your insurance premium here.

In tech, Charlie Taylor reported on the Irish business people included in Forbes’s prestigious ‘30 under 30’ list of leading young innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders in Europe.

Earlier today, we reported on an interesting DCU study which found that male family members are more likely to intend to be the successor in family businesses.

And Killian Woods reported that the state spent more than €1.8 billion on accommodation for asylum seekers and Ukrainians last year.
