Leo Varadkar said there has been a “change in tone of political debate” in Ireland in recent years that has led to a “coarseness and even toxicity”.
Speaking in the Dáil ahead of the election of Simon Harris as taoiseach, Varadkar said: “Today is the beginning of a new era for my party, a new chapter in my life, and a new phase for this coalition government.”
