A vine romance: Cathal McBride’s wine picks for Valentine’s Day
A Valentine’s date at home has so many things to recommend it: not least the opportunity to open a delicious bottle of wine together. These are some of my favourite wines from the Dunnes Stores Simply Better range; each selected to beautifully complement a romantic night in.

While deservedly known for its red wines, the Maipo Valley in Chile is particularly celebrated for its rich and fruity cabernet sauvignons. This stylish expression from chief winemaker Ricardo Baettig is reflective of the terroir and presents plummy fruit enhanced by complex aromas of spice and chocolate notes. Full bodied and well balanced, the palate is rounded by lively acidity and medium tannins where dark fruits take centre stage. Ageing for 12 months in French oak barrels offers added complexity and this would be a perfect pairing with the Dunnes Stores sharing striploin steak for a romantic meal. Decant for an hour to bring out the best of this wine for a simply better experience.
