Cloud Picker Coffee to open three cafés in Dublin Airport

The Dublin-based speciality coffee brand will open its first outlet in Terminal 2 on July 27 2023.

Cloud Picker Coffee co-founders Peter Sztal and Frank Kavanagh will open their first café in Dublin Airport this month

Cloud Picker, Dublin’s first speciality micro-roastery, is set to expand its presence this summer by opening the first of three planned flagship cafés in Dublin Airport.

Aiming to “bring the heart of Dublin city centre to Dublin Airport”, according to co-founders Peter Sztal and Frank Kavanagh, the move will make Cloud Picker one of Europe’s first speciality coffee roasters to establish a presence within a major European airport.

After a decade spent establishing their brand and existing café on Pearse Street, as well as the hatch and roastery in Crumlin, Sztal and Kavanagh will open the first of three planned cafés at departures gate 409 in Dublin Airport Terminal 2 July 27. The other two locations are due to open later this year.

Supported and designed by NE Studios at Nordic Elements, the Dublin-based interior design studio that focuses on mid-century modern design with Scandinavian influences, planning for this project has taken three years due to the pandemic.

Cloud Picker has partnered with the global travel hospitality firm SSP Group, which operate in more than 600 locations across 36 countries.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with Cloud Picker to bring a taste of Dublin’s downtown café culture to the airport,” said Kari Daniels, CEO, SSP UK & Ireland of the partnership.

“We’re sure passengers travelling through Dublin Airport will love the specialty coffee on offer made by our expert baristas, and we look forward to welcoming them to our new outlets.”

All three locations will be fitted with top-of-the-line equipment including Slayer espresso machines and Mahlkonig grinders. The main espresso blend on offer will be called Amelia in a nod to aviator Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.

The new cafés will also be stocking some customer favourites from the existing spots, including sandwiches, toasties, pastries, and salads, as well as fully compostable coffee pods and Cloud Picker merch.

The airport locations will operate in the same way as the Pearse Street location, using a circular reusable bucket system for the café’s coffee to reduce plastic waste, a free water refill tap, and compostable packaging for all food and drink.

“Bringing Cloud Picker to Dublin Airport is an amazing achievement for our business and something we never anticipated in our wildest dreams when we first began in 2013,” Sztal and Kavanagh said.

“Now as we celebrate our tenth anniversary year, we are further driven to provide the very best speciality coffee offering Ireland has to offer Irish and global travellers.”
