The Secret Restaurateur: If you want to support restaurants, ditch the delivery apps and go direct

And so, sadly, the number of restaurant closures continue to mount. I know I keep mentioning it every month, but how can I not?

By now you’ve probably read about the study by the Restaurants Association of Ireland which found that over 200 restaurants, cafes and other food businesses have closed in 2024 to date, costing the exchequer up to €200 million for the year.

Since Easter the wave of closures has become a media issue, and there seems to be some acceptance now in political circles that small businesses need help. However, I’ve become increasingly concerned by a noticeable lack of sympathy from politicians and the public at large. People just don’t seem to buy the reasons being given by owners who are shutting their doors.
