Workers at Tara Mines in Co. Meath are staging a protest over plans to temporarily close the facility.

Boliden, the owners of Tara Mines, confirmed the plans for the temporary closure after announcing plans to temporarily lay off over 800 staff and contractors later this month.

Financial losses at the mine, predicted to be in the range of €100 million, have driven the decision with the decline in zinc prices coupled with high energy prices cited as key contributing factors. Simon Coveney, the Minister for Enterprise, previously said that energy subsidies would not be enough to offset the losses.
