Up to 160 extra staff working as contractors at Tara Mines will be temporarily laid off because the owner of the Co Meath facility has suspended operations, the Business Post has learned.

Two Irish contract mining companies are placing around 160 contractors on temporary lay-off as a result of the closure by Bolden, the Swedish parent of Tara Mines, of the facility in Navan earlier this month, the government has been told.

Boliden has temporarily laid off 650 workers as part of a move to place Tara Mines “under care and maintenance” as a result of “significant and unsustainable financial losses that the business is currently experiencing”.
