The Paternity Leave and Benefit Bill, passed earlier this year by the Dáil, came into effect on September 1.

This legislation gives fathers in Ireland the right to two weeks’ paid paternity leave. The bill represents a major, and long overdue, shift in Irish employment law, bringing us in line with the minimum entitlement that has become standard in many European countries.
