Dermot Smurfit, the newly-appointed independent chairman of John Menzies, plans to conduct a review of the business to determine whether the almost £2 billion turnover company should be split into two.

The corporate veteran joins one of Scotland’s biggest companies after a group of activist investors who control 27 per cent of the company called for its interim chairman Dermot Jenkinson to be replaced.
