This is being called the year of 5G. Networks are starting to deploy ‘fifth-generation’ broadband, with speeds of up to 100 gigabits per second.

But in Ireland, coverage with ordinary broadband remains patchy. Rural areas in the midlands and the north are especially under-served, and the government’s National Broadband Plan is still facing delays seven years after it was launched.
