Official figures suggest the rate at which new homes are being built is accelerating, with a particularly big increase in the number of housing schemes completed.

Earlier this year, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) introduced a new data series aimed at providing a clearer picture of how many new homes were being constructed to address the supply shortage in the housing market, which has been blamed for the recent surge in property prices.

This followedcriticism of previous statistics, which were based on ESB Networks connections and overstated the level of construction.
