For a country with one of the youngest and wealthiest workforces in Europe, not to mention a major housing shortage, it has long been a source of curiosity why international retail banks are so put off by Ireland.

From a macro perspective, all of the key ingredients are there to suggest Ireland should be a hugely attractive and profitable market for international banks seeking growth.
