“Spectacular defects” in Ireland’s campaign finance laws pose a serious threat to democracy ahead of this summer’s abortion referendum, a former state ethics investigator has warned.

David Waddell, who was a senior investigator atthe Standards in Public Office Commission (Sipo), said the lack of regulation of expenditure by organisations campaigning in referendums “exposes our democracy to serious threat”.
