The further and higher education minister ran uncontested, and could become the country’s youngest taoiseach next month at the age of 37

Simon Harris has been named as Fine Gael’s new leader after running uncontested, paving the way for the further and higher education minister to replace Leo Varadkar as taoiseach.

Harris announced his candidature on Thursday night following a series of endorsements from within the Fine Gael parliamentary party and after a number of senior colleagues said they did not intend to stand.
