Self-employed have yet to get a fair shake

The revelations in today’s newspaper that close to 20,000 self-employed workers have been hit with a surcharge for failing to pay local property tax highlights yet again how the tax system discriminates against self-employed workers.

Make no mistake, the self-employed are not above paying tax. Like any citizen, they are under an obligation to pay their property tax bills as they fall due. But they should also expect to be treated the same as any other errant taxpayer if they don’t pay on time.
