The shock announcement of Leo Varadkar’s resignation will give Fine Gael pause for thought about its future direction

In his maiden speech as Taoiseach in 2017, Leo Varadkar noted how several Taoisigh had been elected by the Dáil without the need for a general election to “very significant effect”, citing the examples of Sean Lemass, John Bruton, Brian Cowen, and of course himself.
