The Conservative party's biggest donor, whose family originally comes from Co Mayo, has apologised over allegations that comments he made about Britain's first black MP are racist.

In a statement posted to Frank Hester’s social media, a spokesperson for the British businessman said that he “abhors” racism “not least because he experienced it as the child of Irish immigrants in the 1970’s”.
