Special powers to regulate misinformation online will likely not be enacted in time for the care and family referendums, the chief of the electoral commission has said.

Art O’Leary said that the powers will be activated at some point this year, but that the commission could not say for certain that they will be in force by March, or for the local and European elections in June.

However, O’Leary also said that the commission was already engaging with social media companies in relation to how they would manage information for the upcoming referendums, even in the absence of their new powers.
