Leo Varadkar is expected to step down as leader of Fine Gael and therefore as Taoiseach in a major announcement this afternoon.

Varadkar is expected to make the announcement shortly after major defeats in two referendums earlier this month and as Ciaran Cannon this week became the tenth Fine Gael TD to announce his retirement from politics.
