The chief Brexit negotiator for the European Commission has told a joint sitting of the Dáil and Seanad that he regrets Brexit is happening.

Michel Barnier said he would like to have seen the UK remain in Europe with Ireland and the 26 other member states.

He added: "But we are where we are."
