Election 2016 is shaping up to be one of our most socially divisive. And Labour and Fianna Fáil could fall into the resulting chasm

You’ve probably heard it before, that classic piece of conventional political wisdom. You know the one: Fianna Fáil was, up until the unpleasantness of 2011, one of the most successful political parties in the democratic world.

The statement, though true, actually understates how well Fianna Fáil has done in the past. In 2007 Fianna Fáil won the most votes in every single major socio-economic group, a result which is staggering in democratic terms. ...
