Vintage typewriter with sheet of paper and words "fake news".

On the edge of the sea in Dublin last Saturday, in the midst of the warmest weekend we have had all year, a tent full of people decided to forego the sunshine to listen to a panel discussion onfake news as part of the Dalkey Book Festival.

This interest alone in the topic was promising - at least some people care about the problem and spread of fake news enough to give up their Saturday afternoon to attend a talk on it. As a journalist, however, the discussion, which was led by the BBC’s Andrea Catherwood and includedFinancial Times columnist Simon Kuper, Storyful founder Mark Little and founder of Prospect magazine David Goodhart, did not leave me feeling very optimistic aboutmy future career.
