Many will be rejoicing at the rise in property prices, but there is a catch – higher home values mean bigger property tax bills, writes Eamon Quinn

Compared with the tumult the coalition faces with the water charge, the local property tax was introduced with surprisingly little fuss. In its first full year, the tax will yield a lot more than the government can ever expect to tap from its diminished water levy.
