Superconductor hopes dashed as LK99 falls short

Hopes had been raised earlier this month that the substance could aid in solving the energy crisis

Superconductors are materials that can conduct electrical current with zero resistance. It was hoped LK99 - first manufactured by researchers in South Korea - was capable of doing just that

The search for a room temperature superconductor goes on as researchers have proven that LK99 does qualify as one - despite hope from scientists.

The substance rose to prominence at the start of August as multiple researchers, including Dubliner Sinéad Griffin in University of California Berkeley, supported initial findings by South Korean academics that the substance worked as a superconductor at room temperatures.
