Revenue to move on coal smugglers before tax hike increase

Carbon tax is expected to be raised in budget as state works with councils to tackle smuggling

Revenue is planning a crackdown on cross-border coal smugglers ahead of the expected carbon tax increase in the budget.

The country’s largest coal supplier has complained that lorryloads of coal are being shipped in from the North with no carbon tax or Vat being paid on them.

And there have been no coal seizures at all this year by the country’s councils, which have been given the job of enforcement.
