National debt one of world’s highest at €42,000 per person

State debt decreased to €223 billion in 2023 compared to €226 billion in 2022, according to Department of Finance figures.

The national debt now stands at €42,000 per person in Ireland, one of the highest per capita debt burdens in the world, however there has been an overall decrease compared to the amount of debt recorded at the end of 2022.

The Department of Finance’s figures show the state's public debt decreased to €223 billion at the end of last year compared to €226 billion in 2022.
