Both the Conservatives and Labour are engaged in a "conspiracy of silence" about the painful decisions necessary for the UK’s public finances after the next general election, economists have warned.

The latest UK budget, unveiled by UK finance minister Jeremy Hunt on Wednesday, received a tepid market response across Wednesday and into Thursday, as he sought to woo voters with an estimated £65 billion package of tax cuts.
