The US company behind the controversial Shannon LNG project is developing plans to build a floating gas storage facility on its 600-acre site near Tarbert in Co Kerry which it would hand over to the state.

In the last week, Shannon LNG Ltd, a subsidiary of New Fortress Energy, the US infrastructure giant, has commenced a pre-planning consultation with An Bord Pleanála over new plans to build a strategic gas emergency reserve facility.

When contacted by the Business Post, a spokesman for Shannon LNG said the company wants to build a floating gas storage facility that it will hand over to the state to use as an emergency reserve gas supply, at a cost to the government. The move is in response to the in-depth government review on the state’s energy system published last year, which found Ireland needed to significantly improve its energy security.
