European Commission tells Ireland to plan end of fossil fuel subsidies

Approximately €2.9 billion was spent by the Irish government on the subsidies in 2021

There is no indication that the either Department of Finance or the Department of Public Expenditure is developing a roadmap to explore the ending of the subsidies

The European Commission has told the Irish government to produce a roadmap for how and when it intends to phase out fossil fuel subsidies.

In its latest assessment of Ireland’s draft National Energy and Climate Plan, the European Commission noted that there was “no date, timeline or commitment to phase out fossil fuel subsidies”.
