EU regulator bites back at Irish data watchdog in row over Meta’s subscription model

European Data Protection Board defends curbs on Facebook owner – which had been labelled ‘hugely frustrating’ by Irish regulator

Regulators are at odds over the usefulness of new curbs imposed on Meta

Europe’s top privacy regulator has batted back against Ireland’s data watchdog in an escalating row over its decision to impose restrictions on Meta’s use of targeted advertising.

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) – a group made up of privacy authorities from around the continent – has defended its decision to curb Meta’s ability to harvest users’ information after it was sharply criticised by the Irish regulator.

As revealed by the Business Post last week, the Irish Data Protection Protection (DPC) said the EDPB’s decision on Meta was “hugely frustrating” and would draw it into legal proceedings with Meta over issues that have no “real-world utility”.
