News that Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe is in the running for the top job at the Washington DC based IMF is not entirely unsurprising.

The job brings with it a salary of about $460,000 or €400,000.

Donohoe, already the respected president of the Eurogroup of finance ministers, has long been the stand-out member of the Irish government.
