No trip to the Áras for Leo Varadkar

The Taoiseach cheerfully informed reporters that he was off to the Áras – but says it’s not the right time for an election

There was a brief moment last Wednesday afternoon when the Leinster House press pack’s collective hearts skipped a beat. Leo Varadkar had taken the unusual step of personally briefing journalists following that day’s cabinet meeting and was offering some relatively mundane updates on planned legislation when he suddenly paused before resuming in a solemn tone of voice. “I can confirm that I will be going to the Áras on Monday . . .”...
