There’s a neat rumour that regularly flies around the internet that suggests homework was invented by the Romans as a form of punishment. The story goes that Pliny the Younger, a first-century teacher, asked his followers to participate in at-home activities and that 18 centuries later, in 1905, an Italian pedagog Roberto Nevilis took up the mantle, bringing in what we now perceive as homework by way of penance for misbehaving students.
