Growing up in Dublin, Amanda Coogan learned the value of different ways of communication early. “My parents are Deaf sign language users,” she says. “In our house we used Irish Sign language, the beautiful indigenous language of the Irish Deaf community. In our house, the lights flashed when you rang the bell. Speaking on the telephone was the children’s job and myself and my sister and brother played our music very loud.”
