Arms issue may split IRA

The much-feared split within the Provisional IRA may yet happen if decommissioning is pursued, according to a statement from disaffected members, writes Crime Correspondent Barry O'Kelly.

The anticipated final act of decommissioning by the IRA may end up pleasing nobody, not in Dublin, London or south Armagh. The reasons are twofold, according to republicans. First, nobody knows how many weapons the IRA has, a dilemma that is causing concern at political level.

But, more worryingly for the IRA, a small but significant number of senior Provisionals are bitterly opposed to the destruction of its arsenal.
