Consciously Craving: Sustainable Christmas decor

From reusable crackers to wreath-making workshops, sustainable decorating is not just good for the planet, it’s a lot more fun too

Christmas decorations bring that extra dose of joy, elevating the warm and cosy atmosphere this season brings. But there is also a downside. A lot of the decorations are also made of plastic, painted with dubious, toxic chemicals, covered with glitter (a microplastics extravaganza) and they're just not built to last.

The good news is that we can still deck the halls and embrace the holiday spirit without splurging on elements that'll just end up in a landfill.

So from DIY ideas to get you in the sustainable Christmas decor game to the brands selling eco-friendly decorations that won't make you feel guilty about spreading the holiday cheer, here is a short guide to decorating sustainably.

The Cheat Sheet

1. Use what you have

The best Christmas decorations for the planet are the ones you already own, regardless of the material used. If you've got some bits and bobs at home, care for them and keep using them every year.

2.Make your own

If you are starting your collection now or for those in need of updating, crafting your own with natural elements is a brilliant move. Or hit up charity shops like Vision Ireland or Oxfam Ireland for some pre-loved treasures. You can also snag some top-notch decorations made from eco-friendly materials at smaller, indie shops and stop by one of the many Christmas markets all around the country.

Start by selecting the various natural elements that you want to use. Think dried oranges, anise seeds, and cinnamon sticks. Nature's bounty is also fair game – go hunting for pinecones, conkers, branches, rosehips, or holly.

Tie some twine around the elements and attach them to small cards to create name tags for your dinner table.

You can also create a lovely garland using a variety of elements to create a natural and cosy look around your fireplace.

3. Shop smartly

If buying is more your style, go for decorations rocking recycled materials or the FSC-certified wood stamp of approval. Lots of sustainable options are made from organic cotton, linen, vintage fabrics, or raffia, so you've got plenty of fabulous choices.
