There was a moment in the recent Iowa caucuses – the first contest in this year’s US presidential election – when two candidates simultaneously appeared on stage claiming “victory”.

This is not uncommon. Candidates often slant a second-place finish as a win. This time, however, they were both right. One was ahead on the popular vote, while the other amassed more delegates.
