Waterford Wedgwood settlement will decide future pension liability

Eleven wound-up pension schemes, including Waterford Wedgwood, have sought state support under the government’s Pensions Insolvency Payments scheme for insolvent pension schemes since 2009.

Applications for support under the scheme could be an indicator of future liabilities for the state, according to Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton.

Late last year the cabinet signed off on plans to make pension payments to former Waterford Crystal workers, following a battle over benefits after the closure of the iconic company in 2009.
