Italian imports gobble up Irish turkey market

Unwitting customers are relying on honesty of butchers over the question of origin, industry sources warn

Dublin butcher Brendan Collins isn't at all happy about the "pallets upon pallets" of non-Irish turkeys being imported into Ireland in the run-up to Christmas.

The Italian Del Monte birds he's referring to are wrapped in a clear plastic bag – without any marks identifying the poultry's country of origin.

The only clue as to where these birds have come from is printed on the large exterior cardboard box.
