As a kid, Ian Renton played truant to go to the Cheltenham Festival, the jewel in National Hunt racing’s crown. More than four decades on, he’s in charge of the whole shebang – and eager to build on its already strong Irish connections

Ian Renton has been going to the Cheltenham Races since he was a schoolboy. That first pilgrimage to Prestbury Park was so thrilling that he has missed it just twice since then, and one of those lapses was in 2001, when the foot and mouth outbreak led to the cancellation of the entire festival.
