Lovely Leitrim was a number one hit for the country and western singer Larry Cunningham in 1965. For the security forces who had to trek through that county’s boggy terrain in search of an IRA kidnap victim 18 years later, however, it evoked quite different feelings. “When all this is over, I’m going to shoot Larry Cunningham,” one Garda detective moaned. “Lovely Leitrim my eye.”
