Welcoming more states into the EU is a net positive for all

It is a good thing to extend the EU’s transformational benefits to countries on its eastern flank that aspire to modernity, freedom and shared values

The European Union is a work in progress, by definition. Since the Treaty of Rome was signed in 1957 to create a European Economic Community of six members, it has evolved with the times. Most importantly, it has admitted new members on seven occasions, including 1973 (Ireland and others), 1986 (Spain and others), 1995 (Sweden and others) and 2004 (central Europe).
