We have become almost numb to reports of robberies and assaults on older people. Much more can, and must, be done to make all our citizens feel safe in their own homes

The reaction to the murder of Ashling Murphy in Tullamore last month felt like something of a watershed. The shocking nature of that attack, on a young woman going about her business, united the country in a conviction that more must be done to prevent violence against women.
