Amid gross mishandling of referendums, people should vote ‘Yes, No’ this Friday

Desire to modernise is correct, but sloppy preparations risk sinking both referendum proposals

In the coming days, the people of Ireland are being asked to change their Constitution on not one but two matters in a bid to modernise the 1937 created document

In 1983, the Garrett FitzGerald government put a constitutional amendment proposal to the people of Ireland on the topic of abortion, which was subsequently passed.

The controversial Eighth Amendment, as it became known, effectively gave equal standing to the right to life of an unborn child as to its mother.
