Apple ruling indicates that Ireland has fallen into trap of its own construction

The €13 billion penalty levied by Brussels on Apple over its tax arrangements in Ireland is an astonishing number.

It is a massive reputational blow for Ireland which will leave the government reeling.

But more importantly for official Ireland, it goes to the heart of Ireland’s industrial policy, and calls into question the sustainability of key planks of how successive governments have structured the economy.
