Ireland is an established data hub, but as the evolution of next-generation data centres continues apace and the impact of cloud, co-location and virtualisation is felt, where will the data centre sector take enterprise IT? Jason Walsh reports

There was a time when the data centre was a straightforward thing: either an on-premise operation for databases or a simple hosting solution for less vital data. Today, though, things have changed: data production and consumption have increased exponentially, and so the question of how to handle it all is more complex than ever. Can on-premise data centres be replaced? Should they? And, if so, with what? Co-location? Cloud services?
