Altogether out on the edge

If hyper-convergence promises to bring IT systems together, and edge computing moves them out to the fringes of a network, then they must surely be opposites. Not so, writes Jason Walsh

The past decade has seen a dramatic shift from on-premise to cloud-based IT, but the infrastructure revolution will not stop there.

In fact, apart from some ‘born-in-the-cloud’ enterprises, most businesses use a hybrid mixture of on-premise, public cloud and private cloud. The next step will be a shift in focus to computing at the edge.
